Elementul regulator serie (fig. 4.1.1) realizează următoarele funcţii:
—- readuce tensiunea de ieşire la nivelul specificat sub controlul buclei de reacţie a amplificatorului de eroare,
furnizează curentul de ieşire,
reduce sau blochează curentul de ieşire la comanda circuitelor de protecţie,
contribuie la reducerea rezistenţei de ieşire a stabilizatorului.
Componenta principală a elementului regulator serie o constituie tranzistorul QS, pentru care se adoptă de obicei o configuraţie Darlington; la stabilizatoarele de tensiune continuă de putere aria sa ocupă peste 60% din aria întregului cip. Funcţionînd în montaj repetor pe emitor, tranzistorul serie QS reduce de β ori rezistenţa de ieşire a stabilizatorului.Polarizarea bazei tranzistorului QS printr-un generator de curent constant I, permite tensiunii de ieşire să ia valori într-un domeniu relativ larg. Comanda tranzistorului serie se efectuează prin deturnarea parţială sau totală a curentului I.
